Attorney Biography - Kevin Alan Wolff
Mr. Wolff has a broad base of experience in engineering, business, law, teaching, and coaching. Mr. Wolff has been practicing law for almost 30 years, and has worked in industry in engineering and a corporate finance.
Mr. Wolff has spent the majority of his legal experience working with various intellectual property matters including involvement in all phases of the preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, participation in patent infringement litigation in United States District Courts and appeals of patent cases to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, participation in patent related unfair trade investigation at the International Trade Commission, participation in licensing negotiations, and advising clients on various intellectual property issues. Mr. Wolff also practices in the business law and wills, trusts and estates areas of law, along with providing pro bono assistance in cases involving contracts and traffic accidents.
With respect to patent law, Mr. Wolff prepares and prosecutes both design and utility patent applications encompassing a vast array of technological areas including integrated circuits, semiconductor processing, electronics, telecommunications, computer hardware and software, medical devices, electromechanical devices, mechanical devices, solar products, tools, dental products, and automotive products. Further, Mr. Wolff renders advice to clients on a multitude of intellectual property issues including assessing freedom to operate, validity, infringement, and patentability. Mr. Wolff has been a pivotal member of a number of litigation teams involving patent infringement and validity. One litigation included more than twenty patents. His responsibilities included taking and defending depositions, preparing witness for depositions, working with technical experts, analyzing and drafting pleadings, preparing and responding to document requests and interrogatories, document review and production, interfacing with client decision-makers, engineers, and opposing and local counsel, and rendering advice and opinions regarding validity, infringement, and general litigation strategy.
Mr. Wolff has taken a number of cases to trial and won. Further, Mr. Wolff has been successful at negotiating advantageous settlements for his clients in a number of other cases. Mr. Wolff also assesses various legal matters, and when necessary refers the matters to other attorneys who have more experience with respect to those matters, e.g., traffic accident cases involving malpractice and/or wrongful death issues.
Mr. Wolff worked in industry for General Motors as an electrical engineer in the automotive semiconductor area and as a financial analyst and strategic planning in corporate finance before attending law school.
Mr. Wolff received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Youngstown State University, a Masters in Business Administration from Indiana University, and a Juris Doctor from Indiana University. He has been an active member of several professional organizations including the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Intellectual Property Owners Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association, and the Virginia Bar Association. Mr. Wolff is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and is an active member of the North Carolina and Virginia bars. He also has been admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Mr. Wolff has been active in his community in North Carolina as a coach and teacher. Mr. Wolff has been a paid and a volunteer coach for middle school and high school athletics, and has at times served as a substitute and temporary teacher.
